THE SECOND RESURRECTION

Early Writings, p 89 (263-264)
I saw that the Lord has given the world opportunity to discover the snare.  This one thing is evidence enough for the Christian, if there were no other; namely, that there is no difference made between the precious and the vile.  Thomas Paine, whose body has now moldered to dust and who is to be called forth at the end of the one thousand years, at the second resurrection, to receive his reward and suffer the second death, is represented by Satan as being in heaven, and highly exalted there.  Satan used him on earth as long as he could, and now he is carrying on the same work through pretensions of having Thomas Paine so much exalted and honored in heaven; as he taught here, Satan would make it appear that he is teaching in heaven.  There are some who have looked with horror at his life and death, and his corrupt teachings while living, but who now submit to be taught by him, one of the vilest and most corrupt of men, one who despised God and His law. [NOTE--TO APPRECIATE THE FORCE OF THESE REMARKS THE READER NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THAT A WORK WAS PUBLISHED THROUGH THE MEDIUMSHIP OF "REV. C. HAMMOND," ENTITLED PILGRIMAGE OF THOMAS PAINE IN THE SPIRIT WORLD, IN WHICH PAINE IS REPRESENTED AS AN EXALTED SPIRIT IN THE SEVENTH SPHERE.  AND IN THE "INVESTIGATING CLASS IN NEW YORK," IT WAS SAID THAT CHRIST HIMSELF HAD CONVERSED WITH A MEDIUM AND REVEALED THAT HE WAS IN THE SIXTH SPHERE.  THE DISPARITY WILL BE UNDERSTOOD WHEN IT IS REMEMBERED THAT THEY REPRESENT THE SPIRITS AS PROGRESSING IN THE SPIRIT WORLD, AND THAT CHRIST, AFTER MORE THAN 1800 YEARS OF PROGRESS, HAS REACHED THE SIXTH SPHERE, WHILE PAINE, IN ABOUT 100 YEARS, HAS REACHED THE SEVENTH!  A FURTHER EXPLANATION OF THIS MAY BE FOUND IN THE STATEMENT OF DOCTOR HARE, THAT HIS SPIRIT SISTER SAID HER PROGRESS HAD BEEN RETARDED BY HER BELIEF IN THE ATONEMENT OF CHRIST.  THUS DOES SPIRITUALISM EXALT INFIDELS AND INFIDELITY.]

Spiritual Gifts, Volume 1, p 193 (Early Writings, p 276)
I saw that the slave-master would have to answer for the soul of his slave whom he has kept in ignorance; and all the sins of the slave will be visited upon the master.  God cannot take the slave to heaven, who has been kept in ignorance and degradation, knowing nothing of God, or the Bible, fearing nothing but his master's lash, and not holding so elevated a position as his master's brute beasts.  But he does the best thing for him that a compassionate God can do.  He lets him be as though he had not been; while the master has to suffer the seven last plagues, and then come up in the second resurrection, and suffer the second, most awful death.  Then the wrath of God will be appeased.

Early Writings, p 292
Then Jesus and all the retinue of holy angels, and all the redeemed saints, left the city.  The angels surrounded their Commander and escorted Him on His way, and the train of redeemed saints followed.  Then, in terrible, fearful majesty, Jesus called forth the wicked dead; and they came up with the same feeble, sickly bodies that went into the grave.  What a spectacle! what a scene! At the first resurrection all came forth in immortal bloom; but at the second the marks of the curse are visible on all.  The kings and noblemen of the earth, the mean and low, the learned and unlearned, come forth together.  All behold the Son of man; and those very men who despised and mocked Him, who put the crown of thorns upon His sacred brow, and smote Him with the reed, behold Him in all His kingly majesty.  Those who spit upon Him in the hour of His trial now turn from His piercing gaze and from the glory of His countenance.  Those who drove the nails through His hands and feet now look upon the marks of His crucifixion.  Those who thrust the spear into His side behold the marks of their cruelty on His body.  And they know that He is the very one whom they crucified and derided in His expiring agony.  And then there arises one long protracted wail of agony, as they flee to hide from the presence of the King of kings and Lord of lords.

The Southern Watchman, March 14, 1905 (Great Controversy, p 661; Faith I Live By, p 184, 354; Maranatha, p 335, 357)
At the close of the thousand years the second resurrection will take place.  Then the wicked will be raised from the dead, and appear before God for the execution of "the judgment written."  Thus the revelator, after describing the resurrection of the righteous, says, "The rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished." Rev. 20:5.  And Isaiah declares, concerning the wicked, "They shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited." Isaiah 24:22.

The Great Controversy, p 660-61 (Faith I Live By, p 216, 354; Maranatha, p 335)
During the thousand years between the first and the second resurrection the judgment of the wicked takes place.  The apostle Paul points to this judgment as an event that follows the second advent.  "Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts." 1 Corinthians 4:5.  Daniel declares that when the Ancient of Days came, "judgment was given to the saints of the Most High." Daniel 7:22.  At this time the righteous reign as kings and priests unto God.  John in the Revelation says: "I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them."  "They shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years." Revelation 20:4, 6.  It is at this time that, as foretold by Paul, "the saints shall judge the world." 1 Corinthians 6:2.  In union with Christ they judge the wicked, comparing their acts with the statute book, the Bible, and deciding every case according to the deeds done in the body.  Then the portion which the wicked must suffer is meted out, according to their works; and it is recorded against their names in the book of death.

S.D.A. Bible Commentary, Volume 7, p 986 (Spiritual Gifts, vol 3, p 84-85)
At the first resurrection all come forth in immortal bloom, but at the second, the marks of the curse are visible upon all.  All come up as they went down into their graves.  Those who lived before the Flood, come forth with their giant-like stature, more than twice as tall as men now living upon the earth, and well proportioned.  The generations after the Flood were less in stature.

Supplement to the Christian Experience and Views of Ellen G. White, p 8 (Spiritual Gifts, vol 1, p 175-176)
Thomas Paine, whose body has now mouldered to dust, and who is to be called forth at the end of the 1000 years, at the second resurrection, to receive his reward, and suffer the second death, is purported by satan to be in heaven, and highly exalted there.  Satan used him on earth as long as he could, and now he is carrying on the same work through pretensions of having Thomas Paine so much exalted and honored; and as he taught on earth, satan is making it appear that he is teaching in heaven.  And some on earth who have looked with horror at his life and death, and his corrupt teachings while living, now submit to be taught by him who was one of the vilest and most corrupt of men; one who despised God and his law.

My heart is full of sadness.  I inquire, Must these souls be left to come up in the second resurrection?  Left to be outside the city of God among dogs and sorcerers and adulterers and those who loveth and maketh a lie?  What can I say to you?  You have a strong, hard spirit, unless you have fallen upon the Rock and are broken, The Lord has said, "Come, let us reason together; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."  "Seek the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon him while He is high.  Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon."  "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  If we say we have not sinned we make Him a liar and His word is not in us."

A Word to the Little Flock, p 12
And I saw, that as Christ is the vine, and his children the branches: so Satan is the "root", and his children are the "branches;" and at the final destruction of "Gog and Magog," the whole wicked host will be burnt up, "root and branch," and cease to exist.  Then will appear the new heaven and the new earth.  Then will the saints "build houses," and "plant vineyards."  I saw, that all the righteous dead were raised by the voice of the Son of God, at the first resurrection; and all that were raised at the second resurrection, were burnt up, and ceased to exist.

Before returning to his people, Balaam uttered a most beautiful and sublime prophecy of the world's Redeemer, and the final destruction of the enemies of God: "I shall see him, but not now.  I shall behold him, but not nigh.  There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Scepter shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and shall destroy the children of Sheth."  He was permitted to look down through the ages to the first advent of Christ, and then forward to his second appearing, in power and glory.  He would see the King above all kings, but not at present.  He would behold his majesty and glory, but at a great distance.  He would be among the number of the wicked dead, who should come forth in the second resurrection, to hear the awful doom, "Depart from me, ye cursed."  He would behold the redeemed ones in the city of God, while he himself would be shut out with the wicked.

Pamphlet #96, p 27-29
A voice spoke to me in the night season, while I was in Europe, "Write the things which I shall show you."  Your children and yourself were presented before me, in connection with things that had transpired in Healdsburg.  A portion of this I wrote to you, but not all.  Now these things are before me, when I see the very same condition actually existing which I saw would meet the disapproval of God, and counteract your influence.  God said: "His children are my children, purchased by an infinite cost.  The eldest daughter is an offense to me, and her parents are deceived and being deceived, and know not that Satan is seeking to obtain full control of her.  She is corrupting her ways before God, doing discredit to her parents.  These parents are not wise stewards of the souls of their children."  The Lord holds the parents responsible for the souls of their children.  You have neglected your duty, been unfaithful in your home work.  Truth is one of the loveliest virtues, but it has not been cherished.  Her course is not upright and truthful.  God reads every species of dishonesty.  I cannot even now say some things to you that were open before me, for you cannot bear them yet.  When you made some statements to me in regard to the foolishness of your daughter's course in Healdsburg, and admitted that she was wrong, I thought to myself.  "He does not know, he does not understand the heart of his child."  Evil is carried forward right in your presence, and you do not seem to see or realize it.  You are not a faithful watchman to discern wrong.  You have taken altogether too worldly an commonplace a view of the characters that your children should have.  I had not seen the face of your oldest daughter, and did not know her by sight (until since coming to California), for her face was covered, or where I could not look into it, but the words spoken of her I shall never forget.  Her heart is not right; her lips art not truthful; her habits are not correct.  A child of truth is one who is open in all his dealings.  There will be no betraying of sacred trust, no doubt dealing, no insinuations.  The words of the lips and the conduct of the life will agree with each other.  The child of truth will not have one appearance in your presence, and when out of your sight do and say things she would not have you know.  When before you she will utter smooth things as though her heart was filled with truth, when she has no love for the truth.  You are and have been asleep.  You are just as much deluded as Eli was, and this is why I write to you so plainly, for unless I do, you will go on as indifferent, as blindfolded and deceived, as you have been in the past.  Should your daughter lose her life as she now is, she would surely come up with the wicked in the second resurrection; for every sinner will find his true place then.  Can you not discern the peril she is in?  I do not write these things to sting and burn into your heart; I write them that you may recover your daughter from the snare of the enemy, in place of fastening her forever in his power beyond remedy.  God says, "I know thy works."  Should anyone else mention these subjects to you as I have done, you would, perhaps, deal with them without mercy.  But I must speak, I must tell you these things.  The Scriptures declare, "Be sure your sin will find you out."  There is nothing covered that shall not be revealed, neither bid that shall not be made open as the day.  Attend earnestly to the welfare of the souls of your children.  The presentations and representations made to you by your daughter are fair, but if you knew all you would not feel as easy as you do.  I am surprised at your blindness, and at the course you both pursue.
