HOW  TO  STUDY  THE  BIBLE  quotes

1)    “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15.

2)     Guideline #1 - Understand that the Bible is the Word of the living God.

     – “the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God” Jeremiah 23:36.

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”   2 Peter 1:20-21.

These verses reveal that the Bible is the inspired word of God, and not the uninspired words of men.

3)    Guideline #2 - Understand that this word of the living God is holy and sacred.

“the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 3:15.

You should read the Bible with reverence and not like a common book or novel.

4)    Guideline #3 - Understand that the Bible is a personal message from God to you.

“Stand still, and I will hear what the LORD will command concerning you.”  Numbers 9:8.

“when ye received the word of God...ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13.

These verses reveal that you must believe that the Bible was written as a letter from God to you.

5)    Guideline #4 - Pray for God to send the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you in your study.

“These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you....
“I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak”. John 14:25-26, 16:12-13.

These verses reveal that the Holy Spirit is the best and safest Guide to lead you to understand and comprehend God’s word.  But you must ask God to send you the Holy Spirit.
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” Luke 11:13.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not (doesn’t hold back); and it shall be given him.” James 1:5.

6)    Guideline #5 - Submit yourself to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12.

These verses reveal that the Holy Spirit will correct your understanding, and reprove your thoughts and actions if they have been contrary to the truth, in order that you can become good and perfect in knowledge and action.

7)    Guideline #6 - Accept the advancing light of truth as it is revealed to your understanding, and not resist it.

“And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.” Mark 4:20.

“Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” James 1:21.

These verses reveal that you are to receive and accept the truth of God’s word before you can be benefitted by it.  But if you resist it, you have made it of none effect.
“Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition”. Mark 7:13.

8)    Guideline #7 - Change your beliefs and walk in the advancing light of truth after it is revealed.

“blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” Luke 11:28.
“my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.” Luke 8:21.

“Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.” John 12:35.

“But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully”. 2 Corinthians 4:2.

These verses reveal that you are to follow the truth and change what you believe, renouncing the false doctrines you once held; or change how you act, renouncing your past actions as being wrong, and then walk in this light.  Otherwise you would have handled the word of God deceitfully, and the light will be removed from your understanding.
