THE HUMAN SANCTUARY AND TEMPLE OF GOD, part 4 quotes
1) “Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness...Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.” Psalms 51:6-12.
“Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. I will also save you from all your uncleannesses”. Ezekiel 36:25-29.
2) “Therefore I will judge you...every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die...? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.” Ezekiel 18:30-32.
These verses plainly reveal that it is not just God who is doing all this cleansing work in our soul, and we just sit back and go along for the ride. But we ourselves have a very important work to do in harmony and in unison with God in the cleansing of our soul! And what is this part that we are to perform?
“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him (Jesus), that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin....Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you...
“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness....for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness....For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.” Romans 6:6-7, 11-14, 16-22.
God is telling all His followers in these verses that since He has made us free from sin through Jesus Christ, and we have now become the servants of righteousness, that we are not to allow sin to come back and reign in us. But we are to actively work in keeping all sin crucified and then yield orselves to do God's will in becoming righteous and holy.
God further instructs us:
“For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins...did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered...we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter....For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” Romans 7:5-6, 22-25.
In these verses, God is telling His people that since we have been delivered from sin, and have had placed within us a new spirit, then we are to actively work in keeping our fleshly urges and motions of sin under the control of our mind, and not to allow these to control us. But we are instead to choose and then serve God in keeping His law.
And God further instructs you and me:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness....For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Romans 8:1-10, 13-14.
God is here telling us that we are not just to sit back and relax in our new found conversion, but we are to actively walk and live in harmony with the leading of the Holy Spirit, and to no longer live in harmony with the desires of our sinful flesh. We are no longer to allow the sinful desires and urges of our fleshly soul control our mind, and thereby prove that it is carnal. But instead we are to be led by the Holy Spirit, and actively work in putting down the desires and urges of our fallen nature, thereby proving that our mind is no longer carnal, but is now spiritual.
All these verses plainly reveal that after God has planted within your inner self a new and a right spirit, then what are you to do? You are to actively and earnestly work to preserve this new spirit within you by changing your past ways, breaking up your old habits, and to no longer allow yourself to go back to living in your old unconverted experience! You are to deny and crucify your flesh and all the inner urges and desires of your fallen sinful nature, and instead walk in the Holy Spirit, following His leading, keeping all of God's commandments, and thus cleansing yourself from all filthiness and unrighteousness to become righteous and holy.
3) God created every human being with emotions. These emotions include calmness or its opposite emotion anger; love or hate; passion or detachment; contentment or envy; trusting or jealous; kindness or hurtfulness; happiness or sadness; courage or timidity; pitious or cruel; humble or proud; bold or cautious; patient or impatient; relaxed or nervous; hopeful or despairing; respectful or disrespectful; etc. Each one of us will have emotions that will range from the more noble ones – such as love, trust, kindness and courage, to the least noble – such as hatred, envy, hurtfulness and pride, and whatever emotions we have will vary in strength and intensity.
Once we have chosen to serve God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, and this cleansing process has begun in us with a new spirit, then each of us will need to actively work in cultivating and strengthening the best and most noble of our emotions, while avoiding the less noble. But we cannot totally eliminate these less noble emotions within us, because even these have their purpose in our lives.
For instance, the emotion of hatred is not always wrong for a Christian to indulge in:
“Ye that love the LORD, hate evil”. Psalms 97:10.
“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” Proverbs 8:13.
“Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant”. Amos 5:15.
The emotion of disrespect is also not always wrong for a Christian to indulge in:
“And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.” Genesis 4:4-5.
“Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.” Psalms 40:4.
So these less noble emotions do have their place in our lives, and thus are not always wrong for a Christian to indulge in – of course only at the proper times. But even these more noble emotions can be wrong at times to indulge in.
For instance, some professed followers of God were rebuked because they chose to “hate the good, and love the evil” (Amos 3:2), which, of course, is just the opposite of what they should have done. So then even the most noble of our emotions can become twisted and thus indulged in improperly.
Each and every one of God’s followers need to carefully guard our emotions, and to only indulge in them when it is proper to do so and is in harmony with God’s will. This means that each and every one of us must be in control over all of our emotions, and not to allow any of our emotions to be in control of us! And what is to control all the emotions of our soul as these are being cleansed? Our mind, our will. That is why our mind is the most important thing to cleanse first, because it is to control every other part of us – including our soul and its emotions. But if we instead allow our soul through its emotions to control us, then there will be no stability in our life. We will then become a very easy prey for Lucifer to conquer, and we will then soon make shipwreck of our faith and be lost!
“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” Proverbs 25:28.
“A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” James 1:8.
4) The Emotion of Anger
Anger is one of the most volatile of all our emotions. But is all anger wrong for the followers of God to indulge in?
“But I (Jesus) say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgement”. Matthew 5:22.
“And when he (Jesus) had looked round about on them (Pharisees) with anger, being grieved for the harness of their hearts”. Matthew 3:5.
“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.” Ephesians 4:26-27.
These verses show that not all anger is a sin to indulge in. Some anger is indeed permitted for a Christian, but it should be controlled, and even then should not be indulged in for very long. But by far the great majority of the manifestation of this emotion of anger is mixed up with selfishness, which then makes it a sin for any Christian to indulge in.
This type of anger centering in self is most commonly manifested through our words, which at times may also include cursing and swearing. When this type of anger occurs, our spirit is no longer in harmony with God and the cleansing work going on in us. But now our soul is positioned against God, He is dethroned from our soul, which immediately stops this cleansing process from continuing on within us!
“Why doth thine heart carry thee away?...That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth? Job 15:12-13.
“A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident. He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly”. Proverbs 14:16-17.
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger...be put away from you”. Ephesians 4:31.
“For wrath killeth the foolish man”. Job 5:2.
“Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.” Matthew 5:34-37.
“Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.” Ecclesiastes 10:20.
If any of us should commit sin by angrily speaking any unchristian words, then let us truly and fully recognize what we have done, then humbly repent for doing so, and not try to lessen our guilt by making it appear that we simply mis-spoke or made a mistake to avoid having to repent. Because if we try to find some excuse to placate our sin, then we are actually choosing to live in sin and are also placing upon ourselves the additional sin of lying!
“Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?” Ecclesiastes 5:6.
“Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit....for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” Matthew 12:33-37.
5) What are some practical ways in which we can exercise control over this emotion of anger, and not let it wrongly manifest itself through our words?
“He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.” Proverbs 16:32.
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” James 1:19-20.
“Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.” Romans 12:14.
If we do these things and indeed gain control over this most volatile of emotions, then we will have learned the process of how to gain control and rule over all other problem areas in our life, and thus will be able to become fully cleansed and perfect!
“If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.” James 3:2.
But if we will not do these things to control our anger, then it will definitely control our mind and body, and we will speak hot, fiery words that will indeed cause all kinds of problems!
“Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell....But the tongue can no man tame (without God’s divine power); it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.” James 3:3-6, 8-13.
So we must actively work to control and cleanse our emotion of anger if we want to be saved.
6) For those who already have problems with a hot temper and are quick to speak angry words, then how can they follow God’s word by curbing, controlling, rulling over and cleansing this intense emotion, so that they can indeed accustomed themselves to be slow to anger, slow to speak, and only speak words of blessing and not cursing to those who make you mad?
“And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you...For every one that asketh receiveth...[and] your heavenly Father [will] give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him”. Luke 11:9-10, 13.
“...the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.” Acts 5:32.
“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded....Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:6-8, 10.
When you first feel the emotion of anger rising up in your soul, then recognize what is occurring and do not allow it to control your mind and then your body. But instead humbly and quickly send a prayer to God asking Him to send you the Holy Spirit with the right amount of divine grace and strength that you need to resist this emotion. Then you must submit yourself to do the will of God and not your own desire, and actively resist this emotion of anger by refusing to allow it to be manifested in your words or actions. Keep your mouth shut and do not speak at all until this emotion is no longer riled up in you. So instead of you drawing nigh to this emotion and letting it control you, use your mental will power to draw nigh to God and to let Him control you! Instead of allowing self to speak hot, fiery words that will be a curse to all who hear them, use your mental will power to follow God’s word of instruction in remaining silent or speaking words that will be a blessing. In doing these things you are actively working in co-partnership with God in cleansing and purifying your soul in this particular area, and together you will gain a precious victory over your anger, thus cleansing your soul more in this process of sanctification!
These simple steps outlined above will enable you to overcome your anger, and gain the victory through Christ which strengthened you to do it! And what were these simple steps again?
#1 - Recognize that you are getting angry.
#2 - Pray a humbly and quick prayer to God for help.
#3 - Submit yourself to follow God and to obey His word.
#4 - Resist the inner urges towards allowing the anger to be manifested by using in faith God’s divine strength and grace to instead overcome it.
These simple 4 steps – Recognize, Pray, Submit, Resist (RPSR), will indeed enable you to gain the victory over this emotion of improper anger, and what’s even better is that these same 4 steps can also be used to gain the victory over all other problem areas in your soul! Truly, by controlling anger and your words in faith, you can indeed “bridle the whole body” and be able to control and cleanse all other problem areas in you through your working co-partnership with God! These RPSR steps are actually the key to cleansing your soul from all filthiness of the spirit, so that you can actually become purified and sanctified and fit for our holy Godhead to dwell in you as Their temple!
