THE TEN VIRGINS quotes
by Sean Sessler
1) Matthew chapter 25:
Verse 1: “THEN shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.”
A virgin in the Bible means an unmarried woman, and a woman in the Bible symbolizes a church (Jeremiah 6:2). And a church is made up of believers. We also know that the lamp which these virgins took with them is the Bible or the word of God (Psalms 119:105). We also know that the bridegroom is Christ.
2) Verse 2: “And five of these virgins were wise, and five were foolish.”
Instead of this parable speaking about 10 literal churches, it instead is speaking about two different groups of believers within all churches, some are wise and some are foolish.
3) Verse 3: “They that were foolish took their lamps, and took NO oil with them.”
The lamp is a vessel that allows oil to keep the light burning. The oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit. So in a spiritual sense, the lamp would represent the heart, and as a vessel the heart or spiritual life of an individual allows the Holy Spirit to keep their spiritual life burning. So these five foolish churches (foolish believers) took their lamps, but did not take the Holy Spirit with them.
4) Verse 4: “But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.”
The other five churches (wise believers) did take the Holy Spirit in their vessels with their lamps and their spiritual life was kept alive.
5) Verse 5: “While the Bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.”
To sleep means that you are lost and unaware to all that is taking place around you. So while Christ delayed His coming, these ten virgins allowed their spiritual life to lessen and grow more and more dim, while the cares of this world became more and more prominent, until finally they all fell asleep to their true spiritual Christless condition.
6) Verse 6: “And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.”
It says, Go ye out to meet him, not go ye in to meet him, or stay where you are to meet him, but go OUT to meet Christ.
7) Verse 7: “Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.”
The cry woke them up to see their true spiritual Christless condition, and they chose to trim their lives away from all the cares of this sinful world unto the Saviour. This involved them trimming away all the sin, filthiness and worldliness from their lives so that their spiritual life was again burning bright. We have to do the same if we truly want our spiritual life to burn brightly for our Lord Jesus Christ.
8) Verse 8: “And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.”
Even though the foolish trimmed their lamps and their light began to again burn brightly, it immediately began to flicker and quickly went out because they did not have enough oil to keep it burning. So the foolish had plenty of opportunity to receive enough of the Holy Spirit to keep them spiritually alive, but did not take the needed time to gain an ample supply of His grace.
9) Verse 9: “But the wise answered saying Not so, lest there be not enough for us and you, but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.”
As the foolish had to search for another source of oil in order to restart their lamps, they went to the wise for help. But the wise could not spare any of their oil, and so the foolish were forced to look elsewhere for it. But can anyone give the Holy Spirit working in your life unto another person? That answer is NO. Just as you cannot transfer your character to another, as it is something developed in your own life, so the wise could not give the effect of the Holy Spirit working in their lives unto the foolish. So these other churches went in search of oil from someone else, and probably went unto those who dealt with the subject of the Holy Spirit which would be their pastors and ministers for help.
10) Verse 10: “And while they went to buy from their pastors, the Bridegroom came, and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut.”
When Christ or the Bridegroom came, the five wise virgins were ready with their lamps burning bright. They then went in with Him into the wedding and the door was then shut. This shut door represent the close of probation. This tells us that when the last person on this earth has decided to follow Christ, then probation closes upon all – including the foolish. The foolish had probation close upon them and lost eternal life because when they should have been following Christ into the wedding, they were unprepared and were forced to find another way to regain their spiritual life.
11) Verse 11: “Afterward came also the other virgins saying Lord Lord open to us.”
These foolish churches eventually found another source to light their lamps, but it was already too late because the door of their probation was already closed.
12) Verse 12: “But He answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.”
All who seek to gain salvation without following the directions of the Bridegroom are without hope. There will be no second chances after the door of probation closes. Christ was in effect saying, depart from me all of you who continue to do evil works, as you are serving another master and I have nothing further to do with you.
13) Verse 13: “Watch ye therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.”
Christ was saying here, watch and pray, because if you don't continue in this alert position, you can easily fall into temptation and lose your spiritual life. So my brothers and sisters: keep watching, praying and remain alert; do not fall asleep, do not allow the cares and things of this world to lead you away from your steadfastness in Christ or weaken your spiritual life.
Let us all do as Christ said: let us watch and pray, so that we can gain eternal life and be saved. This is my sincere prayer.
